All About It!
Des Voix…Found in Translation is a Festival of Contemporary French Playwrights in Translation produced by Playwrights Foundation and Cultural Services of the Consulate General of France/SF . This event is a producing partnership with Z Space and Deborah Taylor/FireMused Productions, LLC.
We are a festival featuring staged readings of three brand new French plays translated into English. An opportunity like this provides a glimpse into every day French life, and culture, that addresses current topics in a continental quirky way! Read more about each individual play here.
The festival kickoff event is called the Bal Littéraire is entirely new to a United States audience. Wildly popular in Europe, this unique event is a dance club integrated into a reading of a new play created in 48 hours by the six French and American writers involved in the festival. Party and dance with the playwrights as this event takes place for the first time in the US! The Bal Littéraire is co-produced with San Francisco’s Litquake Literary Festival.
The festival also includes a Colloquium on International Playwriting which is made up of a panel discussion about the process and art of translation and a convening (revolving panel) about the state of international playwriting. These academic discussions include a list of panel participants including Laurent Muhleisen from the Maison Antoine Vitez and Judith Miller from NYU.
All events will take place at Z Space in San Francisco. Learn more about how to get to Z Space here.

DES VOIX …FOUND IN TRANSLATION is an exciting collaboration between Playwrights Foundation, a legendary new play development organization in San Francisco, and the Maison Antoine Vitez (MAV), the International Centre for Drama Translation in Paris, in an exchange that exposes the work of the newest and most innovative contemporary playwrights to audiences in both countries, sharing ideas and perspectives of today’s world, and increasing and deepening cultural exchanges between France and the U.S.
The U.S. Festival will feature a full weekend of staged readings of new plays by three of the most innovative emerging playwrights in France today — translated by the Bay Area’s fiercest artist/scholars, directed and performed by top Bay Area talent. The festival will also include, for the first time in the U.S., a Bal Litteraire – a New Play Night Club, imported directly from the French Avant-Garde, and, for the philosophically minded, a Colloquium on International Playwriting featuring Laurent Muhleisen from Paris and Judith Miller from NYU.
Playwrights Foundation is spear-heading this major new international exchange project, to promote contemporary playwriting to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The San Francisco festival will feature translations of plays by Marion Aubert, Samuel Gallet, and Nathalie Fillion, and will be performed in English during a Festival of staged readings, scheduled from May 25-27, 2012, in partnership with Z Space, a theater located in San Francisco’s vibrant, cutting-edge Mission District. The Paris festival will feature translations of plays by Rajiv Joseph, Liz Duffy Adams, eand Marcus Gardley performed in French in the Spring of 2013 in partnership with Théâtre de la Ville.
The Des Voix…Found In Translation Festival is a producing partnership between Playwrights Foundation, Z Space, the Cultural Services of the Consulate General of France in San Francisco, and Deborah Taylor/FireMused Productions, and supported by our generous sponsors.
